We're excited to share that this year’s event will feature TurnoutNow’s wearable beacon technology to help enhance the attendee experience. Each badge will include a small beacon on the back, allowing us to capture valuable data about our content offerings throughout the event.
This technology will help us gain insights into attendee behavior and engagement, such as traffic patterns across the venue, session attendance, room capacities, and speaker interaction. These insights will not only help us improve future events but also ensure a smoother, more personalized experience for everyone involved. While these badge beacons do not affect your ability to earn CAE credits by attending this event, they are being utilized as an experiment for future events to better choose relevant sessions based on attendance.
What is Beacon Technology?
The TurnoutNow wearable beacon is a small wireless device that broadcasts a unique signal using Bluetooth Smart technology. To capture the unique signal TurnoutNow will deploy small receivers that listen for the beacon signals and transmits them to their cloud for processing. The data we are capturing will be used for the following purposes to aide us in a deep learning exercise about this year’s event.
Do beacons collect personal data?
No, beacons do not collect any personal data. They simply broadcast a Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices.
What is the typical range of a beacon?
It varies by model and setting, but usually is 1–3 meters (~3–10 feet).
Are beacons safe?
Yes, beacons are completely safe. They emit low-energy Bluetooth signals—significantly lower than those from mobile phones or Wi-Fi routers—and pose no known health risks.
Do I need to return the beacon?
No, there's no need to return the beacon—we will not be collecting them at the end of the event.
Can I opt out of the beacon technology?
Yes, you have the option to opt out during the onsite check-in process. Just let the staff person preparing your badge that you would like to opt-out.
Am I being tracked outside of the event venue?
No, attendee tracking is limited strictly to designated areas within the event venue—such as session rooms, common spaces, and select exhibitor booths. Tracking does not occur outside of this space nor outside the venue.
